The Truckee Donner Land Trust announced on Feb. 2 that it is under contract to purchase Carpenter Valley. This purchase is just one in a long line of conservation efforts to the Trust since 2007, which has included purchases of the Waddle Ranch Preserve, Donner Summit Canyon, Webber Lake and Royal Gorge, among others.
Covering 1,320 acres, Carpenter Valley is one of the most important meadows in the Northern Sierra Nevada eco-region and provides habitat for a variety of native birds, animals and plants, announced Executive Directory Perry Norris.
Gorgeous Carpenter Valley in winter
“Located seven miles north of Truckee, Carpenter Valley is in close proximity to the town’s expanding footprint. The diversity of wildlife, the high quality of this habitat, and its position in the Truckee River Basin all combine to make Carpenter Valley a very high priority for conservation. We are delighted to count the The Nature Conservancy and the Northern Sierra Partnership as our invaluable partners on the acquisition,” he said in a press release.
“We are now under contract to purchase Carpenter Valley. The campaign’s goal is to raise $10.4 million to cover the purchase, future management, and restoration. Besides Carpenter Valley, this budget includes two other parcels of 320 acres in the uplands along the ridge that separates Euer and Carpenter Valleys. One million dollars of the project budget is earmarked for meadow restoration and readying the property for public enjoyment,” Norris added.
The Land Trust will own and manage the property, working with public and private partners to restore and enhance the meadow’s functions and open the gate for public enjoyment for the first time since the property was settled in the late 1800s. | tdlandtrust.org
