Community of Writers hosts public events

Community of Writers offers locals and visitors an opportunity to attend literary events with writers, publishers, literary agents and editors as part of its Summer Writing Workshops at Palisades Tahoe in Olympic Valley. From July 8 to 14 (no events on July 12), there will be afternoon readings and events at Olympic House; most are free of charge. Talks and panel discussions take place between 1 and 3 p.m., staff readings are at 5:30 p.m. and the evening readings are at 7:30 p.m. and include a suggested donation of $25.

Expect to hear from well-known writers such as Karen Jay Fowler, Amy Tan, Janet Fitch, Margaret Wilkerson Sexton, Jason Roberts, Gail Tsukiyama and more. A full schedule of public events is online. |


Evening readings, 7:30 p.m.

  • July 8 | Opening talk by Leland Cheuk: “It’s Not About You Until It Is
  • July 9 | Staff readings and discussions from Alex Espinoza, David Ulin and Gail Tsukiyama
  • July 10 | “The Deep Dive: Research in Narrative Nonfiction, Memoir and Hybrid Forms,” moderated by Sands Hall with Ingrid Rojas Contreras, Jason Roberts and Tom Zoellner.
  • July 11 | “You Must Read This: The Narrative Technique that Stopped You in Your Tracks,” hosted by Andrew Tonkovich. Teaching staff share short representative passages from a writer who enlarged or shattered or somehow revolutionized their sense of fiction or nonfiction’s possibilities.
  • July 13 | “Together at Elevation,” introduced by Eddy Ancinas with readings by Katy Hays, Susanne Pari, Amy Tan and Monica West. Tan will show illustrations from her New York Times best-selling book, “Backyard Bird Chronicles.” This event will be live-streamed.
