Tahoe Backcountry Community Radio, at tahoebackcountryradio.org, an initiative designed to bring backcountry users together over common-use FRS radio channels, recently launched, according to a press release.
Based on Telluride’s acclaimed program and modeled through the framework popularized by Rocky Talkie’s “Community Channels,” this effort promises enhanced communication, coordination and real-time awareness across Tahoe’s vast winter wilderness, according to a press release.
Seeing firsthand the challenges of communication in the backcountry, Morgan spearheaded this effort to bring a proven radio system to Tahoe. His goal: to make it easier for skiers and riders to share conditions and improve safety in the backcountry, states the release.
The program aims to establish standardized FRS radio frequencies assigned to specific backcountry zones. Whether discussing avalanche conditions, coordinating travel routes, or simply giving a heads-up about route choices, this system empowers backcountry users with a shared communication tool. The system is NOT monitored by emergency personnel or local authorities and should not be used for emergencies.
Important Safety Note: The community channels are not monitored by authorities. In the event of an emergency, always call 9-1-1 if available. Radios are a peer-to-peer resource, not a replacement for professional rescue or emergency services, states the release.
Telluride’s backcountry radio program, launched during the 2014–2015 winter season by the Telluride Mountain Club, provided an early blueprint. It showed how shared radio channels enable group-to-group communication, helping to relay critical snow and avalanche information, signal safe zones or avoid conflicts on popular routes.
