Do you ever wake up, regret not stopping at the market the previous day and ponder breakfast options before rolling out of bed?

I did last Saturday and went through a mental checklist: no almond milk, no eggs, no fresh fruit. Decision made: Sunshine Deli & Catering, the breakfast, lunch and take-out gem in Incline Village. A place that is absolutely delicious in its simplicity; real food prepared by chefs who care about flavor and authenticity. Good food.

Crepes both sweet and savory, quiche of the day, a variety of bagels and bagel sandwiches, Chilaquiles, roasted potatoes and gravy, omelets and homemade yogurt topped with homemade granola beckoned. I opted for Sunshine’s fulfilling and tasty Mexican-style breakfast burrito with eggs, beans and fresh tomatillo salsa and a mocha.

While breakfast was being prepared, I had a chance to look at the adjacent room complete with a dozen tables for dining and a small area dedicated to culinary items for sale – balsamic vinegars, olive oils from Portugal and an array of loose-leaf teas. Back on the deli side, there is a counter with stools and a case filled with daily specials including roasted vegetables, fresh greens with colorful toppings and baked goods.

I knew I’d return for lunch in the coming week. Roasted vegetables vary daily. The cauliflower, with a golden outside looks delicious, and according to owner Debbie Sullivan, the Brussel sprouts are one of the most popular choices. In addition to the side dishes and entrees, the display case included Valentine’s cookies, frosted cupcakes and delicious fruit bars. Homemade soups, sandwiches, wraps and daily entrees vary daily. Favorites include the Mango Chicken Cashew wrap, turkey chili with cornbread, Mediterranean chicken and lasagna.

I first popped into Sunshine last September when Dan Lee, probably the most knowledgeable tire professional in the area (possibly second to his wife, Cate Pons, a former race car driver) was outfitting my car at Incline Tire. I tried one of Sunshine’s Energy Bars, an oat, peanut butter, wheat germ concoction filled with different types or nuts, some chocolate chips and cranberries, and I was hooked. I knew I’d return again and again. The Energy Bars are nestled next to zucchini bread, banana muffin, decadent cookies and other treats baked on site.

Sullivan and her husband John have owned Sunshine since January 2013. Freshly brewed coffee is always free for customers.
