Syd’s Bagelry and Espresso

A welcoming cup of Early Grey with a warm, house-baked blueberry oat muffin.

The welcoming smell of cooked bacon permeated the air as I stepped through the doorway into Syd’s Bagelry and Espresso in Tahoe City.

Baked goods including croissants and morning glory muffins fill baskets at the counter. Large chalkboards noting menu items are suspended from the ceiling so upon entering you see the list of available drinks including lattés, café au lait, mochas, Italian sodas and Tiger chai latte, as well as colorful writing describing bagel sandwiches, sandwiches on fresh rolls, salads and smoothies.

It had been too long since my last visit, and I was looking for a fulfilling mid-morning snack. The fresh, house-baked blueberry muffin and variety of loose-leaf teas caught my attention.

Wholesome goodness with blueberries greeted my taste buds on the first bite. And, with a little butter, the warmed muffin was fulfilling. Sitting at the counter, close to the register and espresso machine, freshly ground coffee soon replaced the bacon scent.

Syd’s sources beans from Alpen Sierra Coffee, one of the first micro-roasters in Northern California to become certified under the National Organic Program.

Yummy bagel sandwiches include a variety of fillings such as a scrambled egg and cheddar on the Early Bird and, one of my favorites, the Huevos Rancheros including avocado, jack cheese and homemade black bean salsa. There are a variety of cream cheeses, wild salmon and a BLT, as well as seven sandwiches served on fresh baked rolls with natural meats.

The Gobbler has turkey with pesto, the Hot Roast Beef offers a twist on the traditional with ranch dressing and the Pilgrim has turkey with cranberry sauce. The King Albacore is a pescatarian’s favorite with albacore tuna salad, lettuce, tomato and red onion.

The salads – including Greek, Cranberry Walnut, Meadow and Tostada – make a fulfilling meal. Fruit smoothies, blended on the spot, include a combination of peaches, strawberries, bananas, mango, pineapple, coconut juice and blueberries.

Nearly a dozen tables fill the coffee shop. There also is plenty of nearby outdoor seating. Syd’s is family friendly and offers seating for individuals, as well as tables for two and four.

Located above Lake Tahoe, Syd’s is a great and convenient place to pick up breakfast or lunch for a picnic on Commons Beach, or enjoy a bite before strolling through the heart of Tahoe City

Syd’s is located at 550 North Lake Blvd. in Tahoe City. For more information, call (530) 583-2666.
