Fresh, delicious and full of flavor are just a few ways to describe the cuisine at Marg’s Taco Bistro in Truckee.
Add to that friendly to describe the staff, oh-so-good to describe the house margaritas (on the rocks, of course), and hip to describe the vibe at Marg’s from the touches of industrial décor to the bar that opens onto the patio bringing the good eats streetside. Oh, and I didn’t mention affordable, with a two-taco platter only $8.95 and the House Margaritas at a whopping $5 during Happy Hour.
Anyone that knows me knows that I love Mexican food, but Marg’s takes a world approach to traditional tacos by expanding the menu to flavors from Vietnam to Indian, infusing its creations with ingredients from Mahi Mahi to Korean Pork to Philly Steak. And, you may substitute tofu on any tacos. Now, you’re talking.
Marg’s offers Happy Hour daily, so head over a take advantage of those tasty $5 House Margaritas, and you might want to add the strawberry puree to that, too (or try one of the other specials). Then, order the Chips & Salsa Sampler and linger over a heaping basket of fresh tortilla chips and a trio of housemade salsas. My favorites are the Tomatillo Salsa, Habanero Pineapple Salsa and the Roasted Red Pepper & Chipotle Salsa. I haven’t veered from my salsa fetish to sample the other starters, but the Beanless Bean Dip with blended cheeses, tomatoes and green chilies are at the top of my list for my next visit.
Salads, Cheese Enchiladas, Homemade Tamales and Quesadillas tempt the tastebuds, but the tacos are where it’s at. Choose a two- or three-taco sampler served with rice and beans and pick from a dozen choices. My sister, Michelle, and I have been making our way through the options (not all in one sitting) from the Caprese with seasoned chicken, to Banh Mi with marinated pork with Thai seasons, grilled and blackened Mahi Mahi, Menonita with pan-fried cheese, the grilled steak in the Philly, and the Marg’s Club with seasoned chicken and honey-cured smoked bacon. And, don’t forget, sub tofu on any tacos.
If you’re really hunger or want to try a variety of tastes with a friend, order the Taco Barco, with a sampling of six of the tacos.
