The calendar may still stay fall, but the winter ski season in Tahoe is open. Millions of dollars invested in snowmaking infrastructure by Tahoe Sierra ski resorts has changed the face of winter, with most Tahoe resorts opening before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Mt. Rose kicked off the season with an Oct. 19 opening followed by Boreal on Nov. 9, with Heavenly, Kirkwood, Northstar and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows all opening before the holiday. As well, Tahoe Donner Cross Country will be opening Nov. 23.
As the season opens, Tahoe Weekly has rounded up the latest news from all of Tahoe’s 16 downhill ski areas for our 18th annual Downhill Ski Guide. A few things that stood out to us in putting together this year’s guide that will be of interest to skiers – the continued and growing investment in snowmaking; and a growing emphasis on beginner and kids programs, lessons and terrain. There’s also some great events to check out this season including the return of the Silver Belt Series at Sugar Bowl, Pop Up Parks at Boreal, a Community Cup Race Series at Homewood and the return of Soda Spring’s Snowball Festival.
Historian Mark McLaughlin takes a look at the 2017-18 winter season and at the outlook for the 2018-19 season in this edition for “What’s in store for winter?”
Shop Tahoe
The Thanksgiving holiday also marks the start of the holiday shopping season. We invite our visitors and locals to Shop Local this season, visiting the amazing small businesses in the Tahoe Sierra from outfitters and retailers to artists and everything in between.
Whether you’re getting a new ski set up, shopping for the kids, looking for a new holiday outfit or going out to spend time with friends and family, consider shopping local and supporting our community. Small Business Saturday is Nov. 24 and many local businesses will have great deals.
