After a late morning hike to the stunning Lake Tahoe lookout off of the Tahoe Rim Trail, we drove down Highway 267 to the new Tahoe Central Market and couldn’t help perusing all the goodies lining the shelves before making a beeline to the deli counter.

“This is amazing. This is the most refreshing smoothie I’ve ever had,” said Truckee-based poet and writing instructor Karen Terry after sipping a freshly blended Pineapple Cooler, a combination including cucumber, basil, spinach and coconut water. She even started making plans to return while enjoying a small bowl of hearty chili.

We shared The Bomb Spicy Slaw (delicious), veggie sandwich on Ciabatta (equally fulfilling) and sipped freshly made juice blends including the All Green packed with cucumber, celery, kale, spinach, parsley and a hint of lemon. A few delicious treats from Uncommon Kitchen caught my interest. The vegan tiramisu blended with great flavors and texture from cashews, walnuts and coconut milk didn’t disappoint.

Signature sandwiches are in the works and will include new favorites such as The Godfather – ham, salami, roast turkey and pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, tomato, red onion, peperoncini, mayo, mustard and Italian sandwich dressing on a sweet French roll.

“We’re expanding the selection daily,” shared Deli Manager Ben Kenny, who was the Sous Chef at Wolfdale’s before making the move for the family friendly hours offered by the market.

Blended on-site juices, design-your-own sandwiches and salads plus grab and go items make Tahoe Central Market the place to pick up tasty bites, meals and groceries. The small space is stocked with colorful organic produce, microbrews, wine and many of the best selections from the region including Sugar Pine Cakery’s veggie frittatas and grain-free chocolate chip cookies, Truckee Sourdough breads, soups from The Souper Wagon, trout from Wolfdale’s and Sierra Valley Farms’ cocktail mixes.

The Habeger family made a dream come true for themselves, employees and locals when they opened on Christmas Eve. In less than one month, the small market has attracted a strong neighborhood following with a thriving lunchtime crowd.

“I love that we use organic produce from the market in our juices and deli,” says friendly cashier Katie Kyler, a huge fan of the market’s selection of organic produce, fine microbrews and quality deli meat. The deli is stocked with Boars Head and Durham Ranch steak, pork, chicken, pheasant and game sausages (rabbit, elk, duck, venison, bison) are available.

Tahoe Central Market, open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, is located at 8487 North Lake Blvd. in Kings Beach.
