Red Truck at the Runway

I deviated from my near weekly quinoa bowl when I discovered Red Truck’s daily specials. Just like the creative and tasty menu items with combinations not available elsewhere, the daily dishes never disappoint: Portobello burger with Baba Ghanoush, arugula pesto and oven-roasted tomato topped with crispy potato stings on a house-made sesame bun, fish tacos, exquisite quiche with seasonal veggies in a pastry crust, lobster rolls and other absolutely delicious sensations prepared in Larry Abney’s kitchen.

Back to the quinoa bowl. It’s not only fulfilling but also filling with falafel and vegetable Gashi, cabbage slaw, crunchy cucumber pico, the super grain – protein and iron rich – quinoa and a tantalizing red Dal Tahini Sauce. Though I opt for the veggie dishes, omnivores flock to Red Truck for oodles of favorites including Chicken Tikka Masala, Coconut Curry Lamb and Adana Pork tacos, burritos and Naanwiches, plus specials like pulled pork bowls, organic curried chicken with apples, celery, almonds and avocado in a wrap, beef samosas, and pork and rice Dolmas.

Abney sources from Thompson Valley Ranch, Twin Peaks Orchards and Sierra Valley Farms, the majority of the bread is made in house and the sustainable and organic produce is enhanced with just the right amount of fresh herbs and spices.

It’s hard not to eat at least half of a cookie before lunch. Red Truck’s cookie goddess Sophie Moeller is as famous for her friendliness (greeting every regular customer by name) as she is for her concoctions that range from chewy chocolate coconut delights to peanut butter and oats to a delicious cookie filled with blueberries, a touch of oats, coconut and goodness that she calls a muffin top. One bite let’s you know that you are in capable baking hands. And, after that, why stop?

It’s impossible to go wrong with Red Truck whether it’s the counter and café at the Truckee Tahoe Airport or the kitchen on wheels. Seasonal local produce combine with the skill of Abney and his team to make this eatery a must for anyone and everyone seeking an outstanding meal.

Whether you want to truly enjoy a bite out or cater a meeting or your next gathering, look no farther than Red Truck. Abney delivers the highest quality breakfast and lunchtime dishes in town (and nothing on the menu exceeds $10).

Open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Red Truck on the runway offers breakfast and lunch with outstanding views at the Truckee Tahoe Airport (10356 Truckee Airport Road in Truckee). Visit redtrucktahoe.com or call (530) 587-1394.
