Tahoe City Sushi has an incredible variety of offerings that all sushi-eating lovers will adore. In fact there are 14 distinct vegetarian and vegan rolls, and though my dining companion and I tried to taste them all, we sampled just more than half before vowing to return.

“I love how incredibly fresh the ingredients are and how much care and attention is given to everything that is prepared here,” shared Kat, a server at Tahoe City Sushi (who preferred not to share her last name). “We only use the best of the best.”

It’s not the quantity of delicious rolls that make Tahoe City Sushi a “must” on any list of much loved California Sushi bars, but the high quality of made-on-the-spot appetizers, entrees and rolls. I recommend beginning with the healthy serving of flavorful Miso soup that is served steaming hot. I Dream of Jean – Shitaki mushrooms, fresh basil, a hint of garlic, small macadamia nut pieces, cucumber and avocado – instantly became one of my favorite rolls rivaled only by the cucumber, avocado and ginger Shoga my Heart roll.

We will be heading back soon for the pair of Inari pockets with rice and vegetables and to sample the seafood rolls with names inspired by the owner’s love of Santa Cruz and Tahoe. The Westside features spicy prawns. Tuna, salmon and cucumber wrapped with avocado and topped with sweet sauce and house-made toasted sesame chili oil comprises the Sunrise Roll. The Somoa Roll includes mango, cucumber, krabmix, prawn, cilantro and lemon on the inside with tuna and fresh salmon on the outside topped with macadamia nuts, shredded coconut and green onions.

“We love our employees like family, and keep them in our employment for years at a time,” shared Rich and Vanessa Fiedler, the owners of Tahoe City Sushi. “We have the fish delivered fresh daily, and we try to be creative with rolls, none being like the other. We are proud that our rolls have become so popular and sushi bar so successful, and guess what? We don’t have a kitchen. No stove, no grill, no fryer. Just fresh fish and ingredients. We use less rice, and more ingredient, as we do not believe, even during all-you-can-eat, in using more rice to fill people up.”

The venue is small with almost 30 seats including seven or eight bar seats and tables for two and four. In addition to the outstanding food, the outstanding service made our dining experience a welcoming one. Based on 10 years eating locally, Kat is undeniably the most-friendly server on the North Shore.

Tahoe City Sushi is located at 690 North Lake Boulevard in Tahoe City. Call (530) 581-2004 or find Tahoe City Sushi on Facebook. Note: Cash only.
