Having missed the disco era by about a decade, I had no idea what to expect when I was invited to catch “Dance Inferno” at the Eldorado Casino, a show that promises to take audiences back to glittering disco parties with hits from the 1970s. While familiar with the songs of the time, I never had the opportunity to experience the culture that accompanied the tunes.
However, as the first act took the stage, an attractive woman dressed in a sequined bikini and matching thong covered by a white, feathered skirt who began belting out ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” joined by a co-ed cast of sultry dancers I began to imagine how the high energy music, intricate costumes and complex choreography of “Dance Inferno” worked to capture the spirit of disco.
The cast, which features four vocalists, two male and two female, accompanied by about 20 talented dancers kept a high-energy tempo throughout the night encouraging the audience to sing along and get up and dance. Each song featured different costumes ranging from barely there to complex and dazzling.
The set list favored more of ABBA’s hits including “Mama Mia” “Money, Money, Money” “Take a Chance on Me” and “Fernando,” sprinkled with other chart toppers including “I Will Survive” “Celebration” and “Car Wash,” and the energy continued to build as dancers swayed through the audience stirring up the crowd.
Jaws dropped and giggles ensued during “It’s Raining Men” as a cast of six men ditched their trench coats mid-performance and finished the song in just boxer briefs. This was followed up with a sexy, all-female rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.”
Halfway through the show, the audience was laughing out loud and dancing in the seats as the cast on stage embarked on a tribute to the Village People including “Macho Man” and, of course, “YMCA,” complete with the well-known cast of characters including the construction worker, Indian chief, cop and sailor.
From searing solos to numbers performed by the full cast, the show covered everything from Whitney Houston to the BeeGees to Gloria Estefan and more.
While the show may not exactly imitate what it was like to party in disco clubs of the era, it was definitely an entertaining and humorous way to experience the hit songs and dance moves of the time.
This show runs Tuesday through Sunday at 7 p.m. with a 9:30 p.m. showing on Saturday nights until Aug. 10. The Eldorado Casino offers dinner and show packages, as well as lodging specials. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit eldoradoreno.com.
