The Wild and Scenic Film Festival is a nationwide tour that gives environmental films national exposure at more than 100 tour stops across the country. The festival on April 11 and 12 will feature a collection of 16 films that focus on environmental concerns, as well as celebrate the beauty of nature. In addition to two nights of inspirational films, the festival also features live music, delicious cuisine, and beer and wine. Attendees may choose from several different packages of films, with all screening venues located in The Village at Squaw Valley.

Festival doors open at 6 p.m. each night, with screenings beginning at 7 p.m. General admission is $12 for adults, and $5 for students and all Tahoe area ski resort employees.

Earth Day Festival

This free, community event in The Village at Squaw Valley from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 19 gives kids and adults the opportunity to learn about recycling, composting, alternative energy and sustainability through hands-on activities the whole family can enjoy.

At a diverse array of earth-friendly booths, participants can get dirty in the Composting Zone by exploring new ways to recycle, learning about solar energy and checking out the EarthCapades, a series of environmental presentations designed to teach viewers ways to protect and preserve Earth’s natural resources. The event also boasts live music, raffle prizes, a dance presentation, Trashion show and free community recycling event to collect old or used household batteries.

There will be a Kids’ Area located in Tram Plaza all day featuring a Solar Play Station; Make-Your-Own “Do Another Thing” Pledge; Native Planting; Water Quality Exploration: Erosion Model; Composting; Face Painting; and Recycled Creation Station.

The free collection event will featuring paper shredding for confidential paperwork from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for residents only; no businesses. There is a limit of four boxes per resident. As well, household batteries will be accepted all day at three locations: the paper shredding truck, Town of Truckee booth and the Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal booth. The festival is not accepting electronics or waste tires this year. For more information on the collection event, call (530) 582-2909.

The Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival is free to the public and TART will be offering free bus services from the festival for North Lake Tahoe, Incline Village and Truckee. The Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival is a zero-waste event, with food and biodegradable waste collected by volunteers and Incline Village General Improvement District’s Waste Not to be composted. In addition, all food vendors will use biodegradable take-out containers. Past events have yielded up to a 95 percent diversion from landfills.
