Boreal and Mt. Rose kicked off the 2016-17 winter season opening on Nov. 18 to eager crowds of skiers and snowboarders, including Tahoe Weekly’s own snow reporter Casey Glaubman, who headed to Boreal on opening day.

Mother Nature quickly followed with a dumping of fresh powder on Nov. 19 and 20 that saw up to 16 inches at Sugar Bowl with another 14 inches at Boreal. Northstar received 7 inches, with 9 inches at Mt. Rose, Kirkwood received 10 to 11 inches, Squaw reported 4 to 6 inches of fresh snow, with 5 to 7 inches at Alpine Meadows.

So go ahead, call in sick, make whatever justifications you need,
but just make sure to get yourself up to Tahoe and to some
great early season conditions.

New storms heading to Tahoe
Mother Nature is bringing in a trio of winter storms this week to keep the fun going. The National Weather Service reports that a winter storm will move into the Sierra on Tuesday evening and last into Wednesday. While this is only a weak to moderate winter storm, it will cause significant travel delays in the Sierra due to the Thanksgiving holiday and heavy traffic volume.

Thanksgiving Day will be mild and sunny, and then another winter storm is forecast to impact the Sierra starting Friday afternoon while will result in more travel issues with winter driving conditions likely.
The latest forecast simulations are showing a break Saturday into Sunday, with possibly a colder system expected for Sunday evening into Monday with the potential for additional snow in the Sierra and snow across western Nevada, as well, but uncertainty remains high with the details for now.

Opening day at Boreal
It’s been said that the worst day of skiing is better than the best day of just about anything else.

Well, it was far from the worst day of skiing at Boreal Mountain Resort’s opening day on Nov. 18. The sun was shining, the snow was cold and the stoke level was at an all-time high. Hundreds of skiers jostled and maneuvered their way forward as the gates officially opened on the 2016-17 season here.

Though conditions can only be described as early season on opening day, if there’s one thing Boreal learned over the recent drought years, it’s how to make the best out of any snow situation and show people a great time.
So go ahead, call in sick, make whatever justifications you need, but just make sure to get yourself up to Tahoe and to some great early season conditions.
After all, you don’t want to be the one who hasn’t even scraped off your storage wax when you’re telling stories around the Thanksgiving table.
