The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board approved the first new campground facility in the Tahoe Basin in decades on Sept. 23. The privately owned, 53-site campground will be located in Roundhill, Nev., close to public beaches, bike trails, shopping, and the Stateline town center, according to project documents.
The Lake Tahoe Regional Plan allows developed campgrounds in the Roundhill area. Even though nearby public campgrounds stay at capacity all summer, there has been no expansion of overnight camping facilities in the South Shore since the 1980s, and just a handful of new campsites in the rest of the Tahoe Basin, according to TRPA records.
The approved project is on a 9-acre private parcel accessed from lower Elk Point Road and includes campsites, a community lodge and pavilion, a central kitchen and restrooms, deed-restricted affordable employee housing, EV parking spots, and traffic reduction measures such as electric shuttles and free bike use for campers.
